LILONGWE, Malawi — The Ministry of Health has launched a national implementation plan to operationalise Executive Order No. 2 of 2026, which mandates all workplaces, institutions and markets to install and maintain proper sanitation and waste disposal facilities.
The launch event, held on Tuesday, also marked the official handover of eight waste collection vehicles donated by the Global Fund to support improved waste management systems across the country.
Minister of Health Madalitso Baloyi described the initiative as a significant step toward strengthening hygiene standards and protecting public health. She noted that the Ministry will enforce strict monitoring and compliance to ensure that sanitation requirements are effectively implemented across all sectors.
“The waste vehicles will help protect schools, markets, hospitals and communities from diseases while reducing risks associated with improper waste disposal,” said Baloyi.
She further emphasised that poor waste management extends beyond environmental concerns and poses a direct threat to public health. According to her, uncollected waste creates breeding grounds for disease vectors, contaminates water sources, attracts rodents and increases the risk of outbreaks such as cholera, typhoid and malaria.
Minister of Local Government Ben Phiri said his Ministry will work closely with the Ministry of Health to strengthen waste management systems through local councils and health facilities.
“We thank the President for awakening us to understand that a healthy nation is a productive one,” Phiri said, adding that the high cost of procuring waste collection vehicles has historically limited the capacity of local councils to manage waste effectively.
During the event, Baloyi officially handed over the eight waste collection vehicles, which will be distributed to central hospitals and city councils to enhance waste collection and sanitation services nationwide.
The initiative underscores Malawi’s commitment to improving environmental health systems, reducing disease risks and promoting safer, cleaner communities through coordinated government action and strategic partnerships.
