LAWMA trains highway sweepers on safety, PPE use

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has organised a health and safety training for highway sweepers as part of efforts to improve efficiency and reduce occupational risks.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos, LAWMA Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the training was held on Friday along the Ikate–Elegushi corridor of the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

He said the exercise highlighted the agency’s commitment to the safety and wellbeing of frontline sanitation workers.

According to Gbadegesin, the training focused on the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including gloves, masks and safety boots, as well as the safe handling of hazardous waste.

He explained that the initiative forms part of LAWMA’s broader strategy to strengthen safety protocols and ensure workers are well-prepared to carry out their duties professionally.

Gbadegesin noted that highway sweepers work in demanding environments and must be provided with the right knowledge, tools and protective gear to minimise risks and enhance productivity. He added that LAWMA would continue to invest in regular capacity-building and safety awareness programmes, while urging sweepers to strictly follow safety guidelines and use their PPE appropriately.
